A Soft Spot for Yellow Gold
Hey there, I'm Brian.
I show my age a little whenever Apple drops something in yellow gold, and I'm fine admitting it. I grew up in the early nineties, when wedding rings were actually yellow gold, the kind of finish that caught the light and felt like it belonged on someone. That look stuck with me, and it was my era before any of us argued about phones and watches over dinner.
Which is probably why I'm such a sucker for anything gold Apple puts out. Gold iPhone finishes, the new titanium in gold, the Watch that somehow checks my messages and still looks like it wandered out of another decade I never fully left. I can talk leather grain and stitch count all afternoon with a straight face, and then that finish shows up and I lean toward it faster than I mean to. My kids would have a field day if they saw how quick I drift toward the shiny option.
I'm not claiming gold makes a watch tell better time. Some of us just kept that early-nineties pull, and we ended up with a wrist that still wants to catch afternoon light. There's a quiet longing in that for something that feels like it belongs on you when the sun hits it, the kind of thing you don't only look at in a case but live with a little, pass into, keep company with through the day.
We've been living on the wrist side of the shop for a while now, sketching and refining and approving prototypes the old way, and I'll say this softly: we've got a beautiful new band coming that should sit right at home with the gold Watch Series 12. Around the studio we've been calling it PilotBand, and the point is less a feature list than the company it keeps with that finish. The sucker for gold in me has been sketching again, and this band is meant to sit with yellow gold rather than fight it.
